Day Four - Del Rio to Uvalde: 70mi / 110km

NEW DAY FOUR PLAN: Having combined two days of travel into one, I'm now a day ahead of schedule - body feels ok...

MILE 0 - Downtown Del Rio

MILE 2 - My Future

MILE 20 - Highway has grown from two lanes into four. Traffic still pretty sparse.

The visual difference from Days One,Two,Three - everything is grassy and there are occasional trees. Highway now more undulating.

One of my surprises is, when I reached down for my waterbottle, I notice that my bike pump was missing its valve attachment.

This meant that my long ride through yesterday's dark was without the ability to fix a flat, and for the rest of my trip I was without a functional bike pump - no little town I went through had a bike store, although guns were readily available.

Mile 55 - I think I see Uvalde - The shaded highlight shows the requisite water tower that has been the first indicator that I'm getting close to a town.

However... as I approach, there's a bunch of warehouse-like buildings surrounded by fence, and then I'm presented with this road sign:

Got it.

And here's some agricultural land (in contrast to the desert just a day earlier)

MILE 65 - Looking back - The sun is already going down - what was going to be a five-hour ride has turned into over seven hours - I am averaging 10mph and my legs are totally dead (the previous long day I averaged over 13mph even with five of those hours in the dark)

MILE 70 - Entering Uvalde - A roadside tavern with a covered parking lot, all spots filled with the BIGGEST pickup trucks I've ever seen. I conclude that the bar owner, as a courtesy to his regulars, didn't want any of these big strong men to get wet when they staggered to their monster vehicles if/when it rained.

and the day is done as I pull into the local Holiday Inn. Steak Dinner. and then I turned in. Last day of cycling tomorrow.
